Why Choose Hybrid Cars? What is the Hybrid Car?
Hybrid cars are gaining a lot of attention today. With government support in other nations such as tax credits in other nations, who wouldn’t want one? Hybrid cars are not a new thing though. History tells us that these kind cars have been in existence since Porsche came up with their electric cars way back early 1900’s. But this quieter version faded from the scene with the introduction of the gasoline powered cars.
What is exactly a hybrid car and why is it getting the attention of other people aside from our environmentalist friends? Hybrid cars are vehicles that run using a combination of two or more power sources. These make use of solar energy, kinetic energy, electric energy, coal among others, combined with the power of gasoline. Most hybrid cars however, run on electric energy and kinetic energy with gasoline. Hybrid cars look basically the same as your conventional cars. The difference lies in the engine and elsewhere. A hybrid car’s engine is smaller, and it is made of lightweight material. It also uses a specially inflated tire to suit the car’s need.
Why should you choose a hybrid car? A hybrid car is fuel efficient. Because it is running on two power sources, a gallon of gasoline goes a long way. Electrical energy works on instances where the car is expected to consume and waste more gasoline, as it usually happens when you start up your vehicle and warming it up. In the long run, you save up on gas too. This cuts up a chunk from your fuel expenses. Hybrid cars are pro-environment. With less gasoline consumption, there is also less carbon monoxide emission, thus the use of hybrid cars help promote a cleaner air. Your hybrid cars don’t need a lot of electrical energy and the batteries don’t need a lot of recharging. Although the batteries require you to recharge every hundred miles or so, kinetic energy recharges the battery each time the car slows down, when you hit the breaks and when you break to stop. The motor is designed in such a way that when the car slows down energy returns to the battery unused, ready for use when you start the car again. A hybrid car is also lightweight, so when you hit an uphill road, you will be requiring less power and less fuel.
There are other issues concerning hybrid cars though. It is more expensive than its gasoline-hungry counterparts. Since it runs on batteries, you will need extra batteries. There had been doubts on battery life, battery changes, and repairs costs too. Analysts are still trying to figure out if, in the long run, hybrid cars could still prove to be cost-efficient. It is cost of the car plus batteries and maintenance versus fuel savings and better air for the world. What do you think? You might as well try it.
